Make your way to Charleston for an intimate in-conversation events with an exceptional lineup of speakers for its autumn programme of live evening events. These intimate conversations will all take place in the beautifully restored Hay Barn at Charleston in Firle.
One of these speakers is Kate Mosse. In her new book ‘Autumn’, she returns to the marshes and coastline of her Sussex childhood as the season turns: misty mornings, migrating birds, sea lavender, and woodsmoke. Exploring the folklore, wildlife and rituals of autumn, she finds stories in the landscape, and inspiration in the changing natural world. Part nature writing, part memoir and part love letter to Sussex, ‘Autumn’ is an atmospheric celebration of a season, a place and the power of paying attention.
Kate Mosse, CBE, is an award-winning novelist, playwright, performer, campaigner, performer, interviewer and non-fiction writer. The author of eleven novels and short-story collections, four works of non-fiction and three plays, her books have been translated into thirty-eight languages and published in more than forty countries. The inspiration for all of Kate’s writing is place and the stories that come out of the landscape of southwest France, Holland, South Africa and her native Sussex. The Founder Director of the Women’s Prize for Fiction and the Women’s Prize for Non-Fiction, she is also the founder of the global #WomanInHistory campaign, a visiting professor in creative writing and contemporary fiction at the University of Chichester, and a Trustee of the British Library. In January 2024, she was awarded a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to literature, women and charity.
Other speakers in this season are contemporary artist David Shrigley, Gardens Illustrated editor, Stephanie Mahon with garden designer Annie Guilfoyle, writer and historian Virginia Nicholson with artist and textile designer Cressida Bell, and artist/art writer Julian Bellk, art historian and curator Jo Baring plus French fashion designer and artist Roland Mouret.
