“Armistice Day is marked around the United Kingdom with a two-minute silence at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month to commemorate the agreement to end the fighting of the First World War.”

The mayor of Brighton and Hove, Councillor Theresa Fowler, lays a wreath at the Blessing in the Garden of Remembrance service

The council said that rail engineering works between Brighton and Worthing over the weekend could affect journeys, with a replacement bus service being provided.

Both Brighton and Hove Buses and Stagecoach will be offering free travel tomorrow and on Armistice Day for veterans and serving military personnel carrying a valid military or veterans’ ID card.

The council’s Armed Forces Champion, Councillor Amanda Grimshaw, said: “It is an honour to mark Remembrance each year and take time to remember those who lost their lives in war and conflict, enduring unimaginable hardship in the hope that their loved ones and future generations could live in safety.

“Remembrance is an opportunity for people of all faiths, cultures and backgrounds to come together in gratitude for the sacrifices made by those who served and in hope for a more peaceful future.

“In Brighton and Hove, we will also take this opportunity to recognise and support members of our community who serve in the Armed Forces and Reserves.

“I invite everyone to join a local Remembrance event, or simply take a quiet moment to reflect on those who gave their lives to protect others and to remember the devastating impact of war, hatred and division.”
