A Hove police officer has appeared in court charged with causing death by careless driving.

PC Stewart Chalmers, 30, a traffic officer for Sussex Police, denied the charge at Maidstone Crown Court.

He faces trial accused of hitting a pedestrian, Luke Bland, in his Lotus sports car shortly after 1am on Saturday 14 February last year.

Mr Bland, 20, of Lime Close, Uckfield, was waiting for help after a minor road accident on the A26 at Little Horsted near the junction with the A22 when he was hit.

He died at the scene.

PC Chalmers was off duty at the time and his car also struck Mr Bland’s friend Ben Blackford, who suffered serious head injuries.

Mr Blackford, 20, was treated at Hurstwood Park neurological centre in Haywards Heath at the time and is still undergoing treatment for his injuries.

Mr Bland and Mr Blackford were waiting for  help by Mr Blackford’s car after the Peugeot had a minor crash and left the road.

Mr Bland, a member of the 6th Hove Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps, and Mr Blackford had been friends since they were at school.

PC Chalmers, who lives in New Town, Uckfield, was remanded on bail to reappear at Maidstone Crown Court on Monday 28 June.
