Portslade soldier Jamie Janes’s inquest is due to be held at Brighton and Hove Coroners Court this morning.
A row erupted after the 20-year-old Grenadier Guardsman died in Afghanistan when Gordon Brown sent a letter of condolence to his mother in which his surname was misspelt as James.
The Prime Minister had also scribbled out a mistake in his first name.
Jamie’s mother Jacqui Janes, 47, said that she was disgusted by the errors although Mr Brown put it down to his bad handwriting.
She also said that her son and his fellow troops were ill equipped – a charge that Mr Brown denied.
Jamie, a member of the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, bled to death after stepping on a bomb while on patrol in Helmand province last October.
He is now buried in Hove Cemetery off Old Shoreham Road.
His inquest will take place at the coroners court in the Brighton County Court building in William Street, Brighton, and is expected to explore the reasons for his death.
It is due to start at 10.30am and may include questions about his equipment and the time taken by helicopter to reach him.
