Labour chooses Brighton council by-election hopeful

Brighton and Hove Labour Party has selected Tom French, 24, to fight the by-election in the St Peter’s and North Laine ward.

Mr French beat competition from three rivals to contest the seat vacated by Keith Taylor on Brighton and Hove City Council.

Mr Taylor has become a Green Member of the European Parliament (MEP) in Brussels in place of Caroline Lucas, who won Brighton Pavilion at the general election this month.

Mr French was born and bred in Brighton, growing up on a council estate, and now lives in the St Peter and North Laine ward.

He said: “I am delighted to be selected to be the local Labour candidate because I am deeply committed to our democratic socialist values.

“I want to help build a fairer and more prosperous society where the injustice of poverty and inequality are eradicated, and where everyone has the opportunity to achieve their ambitions and potential in life regardless of their wealth or background.”

According to the Labour Party, Mr French has an excellent track record of campaigning on behalf of his local community to improve standards of education and animal welfare, tackle child poverty and climate change and promote LGBT equality.

He has been an active member of the Labour Party for seven years and his community work on behalf of others includes fundraising and working for charities through leading volunteers, grassroots campaigning and advocacy.

He is currently completing his studies at Sussex University.

Brighton and Hove Labour group leader Councillor Gill Mitchell said: “Tom is a strong, fresh candidate who cares deeply about the city and who will promote our Labour values of fairness and social justice.

“As a local resident he knows the improvements needed in the St Peter’s and North Laine neighbourhoods and will be a strong voice on the council.

“His fresh ideas and experience of grassroots community work will make him an excellent councillor and his commitment to fighting on behalf of people in Brighton will be second to none.”

The Greens have selected freelance media consultant Lizzie Deane to defend the seat which Mr Taylor held for 11 years.

The by-election date has not yet been announced but is expected to be in late June or early July.
