Brighton and Hove Council´s books open for inspection

Brighton and Hove voters have a once a year chance to look into the city´s finances in detail.

Brighton and Hove City Council has just announced its annual audit of accounts.

The annual audit is an opportunity to inspect and make copies of the accounts for the year to Wednesday 31 March 2010.

The same right applies to all books, deeds, contracts, bills, vouchers and receipts relating to the accounts.

Anyone with the right to vote in Brighton and Hove can exercise their rights at the council´s headquarters at King´s House in Grand Avenue, Hove.

The inspection period runs from Monday 28 June to Friday 23 July during office hours – 9.30am to 4.30pm on weekdays.

Those wanting to take a look at the figures should make an appointment in advance.

They can also question the auditor Helen Thompson, who works for the Audit Commission – the local government spending watchdog – and is based in The Agora in Ellen Street, Hove.

And electors can make a formal objection to the accounts or any item in the accounts.

East Sussex Fire Authority is also opening its books during the same period.

The authority runs East Sussex Fire and Rescue, which serves East Sussex and Brighton and Hove.

Voters can check the books at County Hall in St Anne´s Crescent, Lewes, having first made an appointment.

And they can also quiz the auditor Lizzie Peers, who works for the Audit Commission in Agora House.

The rights are governed by the Audit Commission Act 1998 and the Accounts and Audit Regulations 2003.

Online guides to audit inspection rights can be read here and here.
