Six people were injured, three seriously, on the A23 near Brighton today, (Monday, June 14), when a Renault Clio and a Vauxhall Astra collided and then smashed into two parked cars.

Four women had to be cut free from the Clio and six people were taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton and Worthing Hospital.

The collision happened at 12.07am just south of the Black Lion in London Road, Patcham.

The black Clio, with five young women inside, was travelling north when it was in collision with a Vauxhall Astra driven by a 26-year-old man from Brighton.

The vehicles then crashed into a parked silver Ford Focus and white Mercedes Sprinter van.

The Clio was being driven by a 19-year-old woman from Worthing, who was slightly injured.

Three 19-year-old women from Newhaven, Rustington and Portslade received serious injuries, two potentially life-threatening.

The fourth passenger, a 17-year-old from Lindfield who was slightly injured, was taken to Worthing Hospital.

The road was closed for five hours while rescue, recovery and investigation work took place.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash to contact 0845 60 70 999 quoting Operation Royton.
