Hollingdean teenagers save boy from drowning in Brighton Marina

A 14-year-old fisherman almost drowned after falling into Brighton Marina.

Ben Cooke, from Burgess Hill, accidentally tumbled into the water while he was fishing on the harbour arm.

He was saved when his fall was spotted by Harry Oswin and Connor Macey, both from Hollingdean, who threw him a life belt and raised the alarm.

Car wash worker Matt Davies, 41, from the nearby Brighton Marina Car Wash, ran to help and the trio pulled Ben back to safety.

They were all presented with bravery awards by Sussex Police at Brighton Marina this week to thank them for their efforts during the incident on February 17.

Harry and Connor were rewarded with a free mackerel fishing trip from Ross Boat Trips, based at the marina.

Detective Sergeant Jackie Shaw, who presented the award trophies, said: “Both Harry and Conner should feel rightly proud of being recognised for their quick actions in rescuing Ben from the sea. Had it not been for their quick thinking, we, the police, could have had to deal with a much more serious incident as a consequence.”

Harry said: “I really didn’t expect this – we saw Ben fall in and we weren’t just going to leave him to drown.”
