A woman whose daughter went missing from her home in Hove 36 years ago has been told she is alive – but does not want to speak to her.
Pamela Hampson disappeared from her home in 1973 when she was 25 – she would now be 62.
She continued to write to her parents Oliver and Arthur until July 1974, but since then nothing has been heard from her.
In April this year, Sussex Police launched another search for Pamela – and tracked her down.
But Pamela told them she did not want any personal details passed on – to Olive’s dismay (Arthur passed away five years ago).
Olive, 86, of Melton, Leicestershire, told the Melton Times: “The fact that she doesn’t want to know us is very upsetting.
“Knowing she’s all right doesn’t help really. I feel ashamed.
She added: “She could have children, grandchildren, I just don’t know.If I could only see her and speak to her and tell her I love her.”
In April, Leicestershire Police’s cold case review team visited Olive and her son, Richard, to take DNA samples.
A Sussex Police spokesman said: “Sussex Police made enquiries about Pamela Hampson earlier this year after a contact from Leicestershire Constabulary. We were subsequently able to trace Pamela and we’re satisfied that she is well.
“She has specifically said that no further information should be given to anyone about her whereabouts or circumstances and we are bound by that requirement.”
