Woman dies after Hove fire

Councillors have paid tribute to the woman who died after a fire started in a flat in Hove early yesterday morning (Tuesday 24 October).

Louisa Tipping, 42, who grew up in Brighton, was brought out of the flat by firefighters but paramedics were unable to save her.

She was a much-loved daughter and mother and several of her friends have left tributes online.

Damage to the flat, in Kingston Close, was clearly visible from West Way. The flat is above Hangleton Library which was also cordoned off all day yesterday while an investigation continued into the cause of the blaze.

Councillors John Hewitt, Amanda Grimshaw and Faiza Baghoth, who represent Hangleton and Knoll on Brighton and Hove City Council, spoke today about the fire and its aftermath.

One of the three, Councillor Hewitt, is a neighbour who also lives in Kingston Close.

Kingston Close and West Way were closed as police and firefighters returned to the scene of the blaze to make the building safe

The three councillors said: “We are extremely saddened to learn that a resident has died in a house fire in Kingston Close.

“This is tragic news for our community and our thoughts are with the woman’s friends, family and everyone who knew her.

“We would like to reassure residents that the fire was contained and firefighters are making sure the damaged building is made safe.

“There is no intention to move any residents in the surrounding area out of their homes.

“Understandably, this will be a shock to residents and we encourage anyone who is concerned to contact us.

“Sussex Police have confirmed that an investigation is under way and are appealing for witnesses.

“We encourage anyone who has any information that can help to contact police online or via 101, quoting Operation Compton.”
