Several schools in Brighton and Hove have closed today (Tuesday 12 March), including all the mainstream secondary schools, after more snow fell overnight.

There were big queues on the A27, A23 and M23 with many abandoned cars. Sussex Police said: “Don’t travel unless it’s essential.”

No buses are running and rail commuters are facing delays and cancellations. Brighton and Hove Buses said: “All of our bus services are currently withdrawn due to the atrocious weather and road conditions.”

Fresh snow has fallen on and off overnight and through the rush hour and has settled on top of ice and yesterday’s snow in many places.

The snowfall is expected to peter out by noon and this afternoon the wind will drop. Temperatures tomorrow are forecast to reach a maximum of 6C by the afternoon although the roads in the morning may still be dangerously icy.

Sussex Police said that officers had attended more than 300 crashes across the county. No one had suffered life-threatening injuries.

This morning officers were waking drivers who had spent the night trapped and sleeping in their cars and encouraging others who had abandoned their cars to collect them.

The train operator Southern said: “Snow and freezing temperatures in the south east since yesterday and overnight are leading to cancellations and delays to train services on our network this morning, particularly on routes through Sussex.”
