Terry’s: An American Tragedy About Cars, Customers, and Selling Cars to Customers Review

Terry’s is open for business and ready to sell their cars. You better be there, because this is a special day, and most importantly, they have a target to meet!

This extremely funny play debuted this week in Brighton Fringe before transferring to Edinburgh, where we hope it will enjoy a very successful run. It is the story of a car dealership, the people who work there and the pressures they’re under. We never meet Terry himself (thank goodness – he seems to be a nasty piece of work!), but we see his impact. These workers are adept at promotions, fearless in their sales techniques and determined to achieve the target.

Terry’s is a wonderful observation piece, bringing strong characters to the stage and we engaged with every one of them. The drama is exaggerated throughout: silly stunts, strained relationships, relentless competition and ridiculous adverts are included, each played out with a clown like mentality. Their faces will stay with us – rictus grins vividly showing massive pride only to be replaced by bitter disappointment. As we learn more about each character and the deadline looms, the team comes together and we cheer them on. They also sing, play their own instruments and dance on stage – this show really made the actors work for us, and it was all appreciated. One particular stand out moment was a mime sequence with a balloon which was heartfelt and beautifully performed – such a clever device.

Whilst you are sure you don’t want to work for Terry by the end of the show, you want to know more about the people you’ve just met, you want them to live on and you want them to meet their next target as well.

A wonderfully original show performed by the Brillig Theatre Company who devised and wrote the piece together. It is a show with a great deal of physicality throughout, a great deal of warmth and some very silly moments. Thoroughly recommended – just don’t buy one of their cars! (Terry doesn’t deserve it!)
