Brighton University earns praise from students

Students have praised Brighton University in a national survey.

According to the university, which has its main campus in Falmer: “An overwhelming number of students have given the University of Brighton the highest marks in a national survey.

“More than 90 per cent of students said they were happy and satisfied with their courses in a whole range of subjects including pharmacy, information services, philosophy, physiology and pathology, social work, education, history and geography.

“The National Student Survey (NSS), published today (Wednesday 18 August) by the Higher Education Funding Council for England, showed more University of Brighton students than ever took part in the survey – 65 per cent compared to 57 per cent in 2009.

“The NSS gathers feedback on students’ perception of their courses to help inform future applicants where to choose venues for higher education, and to contribute to public accountability.

“More than 4,000 final-year students at Brighton were asked for their views on six areas of student experience including teaching, assessment and feedback, academic support, organisation and management, learning resources and personal development.

“In many of the categories, in particular assessment, organisation and personal development, the results showed the university had improved over 2009.

“Students on NHS placements also reported high levels of satisfaction, with 84 per cent happy with their experience.

“Overall, the NSS showed 82 per cent of students were pleased with the teaching and with the learning resources available, 86 per cent said they were able to access IT resources and 85 per cent felt staff were good at explaining things.”

Professor Julian Crampton, the university’s vice-chancellor, said: “We are delighted that the majority of our students are happy with their courses and particularly pleased that our teaching staff and our learning resources are rated so highly.

“The university aims to provide an excellent teaching and learning environment for students and this survey is a valuable tool in helping us understand what is working well and where we need to improve.

“We shall be studying the results in greater detail over the next few months and feeding back some of the changes we have introduced as a result of the survey to our students.

“We would like to thank all our final year students who completed the survey and all the staff at the university who contribute to the student quality of the student experience.”
