Brighton and Hove is due to stop and remember those who sacrificed their lives in wartime in the service of the country at a series of events throughout the day today (Sunday 9 November).
The services will be attended by civic leaders, with all events open to any members of public who wish to attend.
The main Brighton remembrance parade and service is scheduled to start at 10.50am at Brighton War Memorial, in Old Steine, Brighton.
After the parade and service, a wreath-laying ceremony will be followed by a march past and salute. People are asked to arrive by 10.30am.
The area is currently the scene of construction work for the final phase of the Valley Gardens project.
Brighton and Hove City Council said: “Temporary surfaces are in place to make sure pavements are safe to allow remembrance commemorations to take place this year.
“Once complete, the scheme will provide an enhanced setting for the war memorial, with new paving within the memorial area, a new public space and tree-planting.”
The maor of Brighton and Hove, Amanda Grimshaw, is also the council’s armed forces champion.
Councillor Grimshaw said: “Remembrance Sunday is an opportunity for people across all faiths, cultures and backgrounds to come together to remember and honour the sacrifice of all those who have lost their lives through war and conflict and unite in hope for peace.
“In Brighton and Hove, we will also dedicate this time to show our support to those from the city who are serving soldiers or reserves.
“This year, we’re proud to have achieved the gold award in the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme, the highest badge of honour for employers who champion veterans, reservists, cadet forces adult volunteers and military families in the workplace.
“I invite everyone to join in on a community event or just take a quiet moment to remember those who gave their life to protect their loved ones, their country and their way of life and reflect on the devastating effects of hatred and division.”
The maor was due to start the day at the Royal Sussex Regiment Memorial, at the bottom of Regency Square, opposite the i360. Anyone planning to attend the Royal Sussex Regimental Association remembrance, at 9am, is asked to arrive by 8.50am.
The main remembrance parade and service in Hove is due to start at 2.30pm at the War Memorial, in Grand Avenue, Hove, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony, a march past and sslute and then a parade to the civic memorial service at All Saints Church, in The Drive. Anyone planning to attend is asked to arrive by 2.20pm.
This morning, the remembrance parade and service for Portslade is due to start at 10.45am in Easthill Park, Manor Road, Portslade, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at 11am. Anyone planning to attend is asked to arrive by 10.30am.
In Rottingdean, the remembrance parade and service is scheduled to start at 11.30am at the Rottingdean War Memorial, at the Village Green, Rottingdean. The parade traditionally forms up at the lower end of Rottingdean High Street at 11.30am, with the service of remembrance starting promptly at noon at the War Memorial.
And at Hove Cemetery, in Old Shoreham Road, two brief wreath-laying ceremonies are due to take place at 11am, first at the North Gate Memorial then at the South Gate Memorial. Anyone planning to attend is asked to arrive by 10.50am.
The armistice – the formal end of fighting in the First World War – is due to be marked on the 107th anniversary on Tuesday 11 November.
A service is planned to start at 10.50am, with a two-minute silence at 11am at the Brighton War Memorial, in Old Steine Gardens, Brighton. Anyone planning to attend is asked to arrive by 10.45am.
And a service is also scheduled to start at 10.55am, at the Hove War Memorial, in Grand Avenue, Hove, with a two-minute silence at 11am. Anyone planning to attend is asked to arrive by 10.50am.
In Rottingdean, the armistice is also due to be marked with a short service starting at 10.55am at the War Memorial, at the Village Green, with a two-minute silence at 11am. Anyone planning to attend is asked to arrive by 10.50am.
Today, the acts of remembrance will mean that a number of roads will be closed.
In Brighton, Pavilion Parade, Old Steine, Castle Square, North Street (from Bond Street to Castle Square), the Aquarium roundabout and Madeira Drive are scheduled to be closed from 10am to noon.
In Hove, Grand Avenue, including the Church Road traffic lights, and The Drive, including the Eaton Road traffic lights, are scheduled to be closed from 1.45pm to 3.45pm.
In Portslade, Locks Hill, Manor Road (from Locks Hill to Easthill Way) and Easthill Way (from Manor Road to Easthill Park) are scheduled to be closed from 10.25am to 10.55am.
In Rottingdean, The Green and High Street on both sides of the A259 Marine Drive are scheduled to be closed from closed from 11.30am to 1pm.
