Five more streets where people flouting traffic rules could be caught on camera and fined have been proposed.
Brighton and Hove City Council was given permission to use cameras to enforce traffic regulations last year, and will use its new powers at three schools next month.
It is now asking for views on using the powers at five more locations where drivers regularly break the rules.
They are:
- Carden Avenue onto Carden Crescent – enforcement of the one-way street restriction
- London Road onto New England Road – enforcement of the prohibited left turn
- Ditchling Road onto Baker Street – enforcement of the prohibited left turn
- West Street onto Rottingdean High Street – enforcement of the prohibited right turn
- Francis Street – enforcement of the motor vehicle prohibition (except for access)

The council says the locations have been chosen with a priority on safety.
Cabinet member for transport Trevor Muten said: “Traffic regulations are there for a reason – to protect people and reduce the risk of collisions and conflict between different road users.
“We are committed to making roads safer for everyone.
“We’re keen to hear from residents, businesses and anyone who travels through these areas so that we can understand their views as part of the consultation process.”
Drivers observed ignoring the existing restrictions could receive a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN), the cost of which is £70, or £35 if paid within 21 days. These costs are set nationally.
There will be a six-month warning period following the introduction of the cameras.
During this time, the registered keeper of the vehicle will receive a warning notice in the first instance rather than a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).
The powers are called Moving Traffic Enforcement and allow councils to enforce contraventions which had previously only been enforceable by police forces.
They don’t allow councils to enforce parking offences via camera. The only parking offences which can be enforced this way apply to red routes – one of the reasons Brighton and Hove City Council is introducing them.
The three schools where camera enforcement of school streets schemes are due to start next month are Queen’s Park, Hangleton and West Hove / Hove Junior Primary Schools.
And the cash-cow keeps paying…… 😐
Only if drivers break the rules.
The fact these kind of camera can be significant earners simply show how low the average standard of driving is.
Rather a few quid in the coffers than a child in hospital due to drivers selfish actions.
Yet this Labour Council have no money to keep Wellington Day Centre open. Not even with the new income all these new spy cameras will be generating through relentless fines???
Fines are kept in a separate fund and can’t be used to pay for other services.

Getting fined is 100% in the hands of the driver. Why is this a hard concept to understand?
Anything to make more money. I suppose they’ve got to recoup the £50m i360 write-off somehow.
As Chris said above, fines can’t be used in that way.
