Seed swap and food growing scheme prepares for key annual event

A community group is holding its biggest annual fundraiser where scores of people are expected to swap seeds – and where there will also be activities for children.

The Growing Hollingdean Plant and Seed Fair and Annual General Meeting (AGM) is due to take place at a new venue – St Richard’s Church, in Beal Crescent, Hollingdean, from 2pm to 5pm on Saturday 18 April.

The organisers said: “Growing Hollingdean is a community-led project supporting local food growing, biodiversity and wellbeing.

“We currently help look after six community gardens, one forest garden and 326 fruit trees across the Hollingdean council estate.

“We also run educational walks and community events, including activities such as storytelling, to bring people together and connect them with nature.

“This is a community-led fundraising event, where our Plant and Seed Fair runs on a swap or donation basis.

“All plants have been locally grown in Hollingdean and will include flowers, fruit and vegetable plants.

“The event is very important to us as it helps raise around £1,200 per year towards our core costs, including insurance, website, refreshments for volunteers, printing and tool maintenance, which enable us to continue supporting local community growing.

“There will also be a community café serving home-baked sweet and savoury goods, hot and cold drinks as well as a tombola with prizes including a food hamper from Infinity Foods, a £25 voucher from Flour Pot Bakery and a £10 voucher from Fairways Fruit and Veg.

“We will also have a children’s activity where they can plant a sunflower seed in a newspaper pot to take home.

“The AGM will take place towards the end of the event where we will share updates on our work and hold voting for the roles of chair, secretary and treasurer.”
