Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus once again kick off the Brighton Fringe with one of their heralded performances and this time they are celebrating the heroes who have inspired them.

The Chorus has become known over the past 20 years for its tight performances, full of song, laughter and personality. This season, they are focusing on Heroes – a celebration of the musical legends who inspired us all, including the LGBTQ trailblazers who have made a lasting impact on our community. Alongside these community greats will be a musical pantheon of artists who inspired us, from David Bowie, Freddie Mercury and George Michael through to newer heroes like JADE and Self Esteem who are carrying that legacy forward.

The Chorus is well known for its stirring and innovative arrangements crafted by the in-house music team and Heroes will showcase some of their finest work to date, lending familiar songs a fresh choral twist, along with several standout solo performances from Chorus members. Audiences can expect to laugh, shed a few tears and experience plenty of queer joy through the artists who helped us feel seen growing up and the community heroes who continue to make a difference today.

Over the two nights of performance, the Chorus will invite and interview people who have made amazing differences to our local LGBTQ community, including Sarah Savage, CEO of Trans Pride Brighton, Gail Smith, former chair of the Sussex Gay Liberation Front, Professor Sheena McCormak, clinical epidemiologist who led the UK’s groundbreaking PrEP study, and Duncan Lustig-Prean, retired Royal Navy Officer who successfully challenged the ban on LGBTQ+ personnel in the Armed Forces. They will share the personal stories behind these amazing achievements, highlighting the impact they made and the challenges that still lie ahead.

Joe Paxton, artistic director of Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus, said: “Brighton occupies a unique position in the UK’s LGBTQ+ community and so it is vital that we support the essential work of our community heroes. We are delighted to give some of them a platform at our shows as we celebrate some outstanding musical icons.”

Last year’s sold-out ‘Retrospective’ show showed what this choir can do and this show seems to contain all the ingredients for another fabulous night of music and performance. The Chorus will also be raising funds for its new charity partner, Tonic.

Tonic is a social group for gay men and those who identify with gay male culture, bringing people together for fun, friendship and connection without alcohol or drugs.

Performance Dates:

Friday 1 May – 7.30 pm – St George’s Church, Kemp Town, Brighton

Saturday 2 May – 7.30 pm – St George’s Church, Kemp Town, Brighton

Tickets are available from Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus.
