Brighton brickie wins £1m lottery prize

A Brighton bricklayer has won £1 million playing the National Lottery, the operator Allwyn said today (Thursday 9 July).

The man, in his fifties, has decided to stay anonymous but told Allwyn that he would pay off his mortgage, add to his savings and donate some of his winnings to charity.

Allwyn, which took over as the lottery operator from Camelot in February 2024, said: “A construction worker from Brighton has won £1 million on the National Lottery Lotto draw on Saturday 6 June, matching five main numbers and the bonus ball online to become a millionaire.

“The winner, a man in his fifties, plans to use his winnings to pay off his mortgage while setting aside the rest into savings and donations to charitable organisations.”

The man said: “I’ve only ever played the Lotto and had numerous small wins in the past but nothing big so this is absolutely amazing. I cannot believe it was me.”

Allwyn winners adviser Liz Styles said: “Just as the National Lottery supports good causes, we are so pleased that our winner is supporting charitable organisations close to his own heart.

“We’d also like to tell him that, in his disbelief, it can always be you.”

Allwyn said: “New Lotto, which started on Wednesday 10 June, gives players two chances to win from a single £2 line with a new two-round format.

“The recent changes to the game are set to deliver more winners, more chances to win and more millionaires by improving players’ chances of winning any prize from 1 in 9.3 to 1 in 4.9.

“They are also expected to more than double the number of Lotto millionaires from around 140 a year to around 345.

“As well as making more millionaires and more prize winners, this will mean even more money raised for good causes across the UK.

“Playing any National Lottery game is more than just a chance to win. It’s a way to contribute to something much bigger.

“Each week, players help generate around £33 million for National Lottery-funded projects. With over £53 billion raised for good causes since launch, this funds hundreds of projects in every postcode area across the UK.

“From supporting the arts and sport sectors, to empowering local community groups and preserving iconic British landmarks, players’ participation makes a difference every single day.”
