Police believe that they have identified the man suspected of carrying out a sex attack in Brighton on Friday (9 October) after an appeal for the public’s help.
Sussex Police published security camera pictures of the man suspected of sexually assaulting a woman in the early hours of the morning.
Today (Sunday 11 October), the force said: “Following an appeal issued on Friday 9 October, we now believe we have identified a man in connection with inquiries into a reported sexual assault in Cheapside, Brighton.
“Thank you to everyone who reported information to us.”
Previously, Sussex Police said that officers were working to locate the suspect, adding: “On Friday 9 October at around 2.30am, it was reported that a woman in her twenties was sexually assaulted as she walked uphill in Cheapside.
“The suspect is reported to have approached the woman after walking behind her for some distance.
“A member of the public located the victim and the suspect fled the area on foot in the direction of London Road.
“The man we would like to speak with in connection with inquiries is described as in his mid to late twenties, white, with dark hair and a short blond / brown beard and moustache.
“The victim is being supported by specialist officers as the investigation continues to move at pace.”
Chief Superintendent Adam Hays, the police divisional commander of Brighton and Hove, said: “Sexual violence has no place in Brighton and Hove and we will not tolerate it in any form.
“We take every report of sexual offending extremely seriously and are committed to doing all we can to protect the public, support victims and apprehend those found responsible.
“We encourage anyone who feels unsafe, witnesses suspicious behaviour or has concerns about someone’s actions to make a report to police.”
Sussex Police appealed for information including any footage to assist the investigation to be reported online or by calling 101, quoting Operation Toronto.
