Five schools in Brighton and Hove will start the new term this week with a new name.
Three of them are in south Portslade where infant and junior schools have been turned into all-through primary schools as part of an attempt to tackle the shortage of school places.
Portslade Infant School has been renamed Brackenbury Primary School to honour a former benefactor.
The idea came from a research project carried out by pupils who found out that their school was opened in the 1870s by a wealthy philanthropist called Hannah Brackenbury.
St Nicolas Church of England Junior School is now St Nicolas Church of England Primary School.
And St Peter’s Community Infant School is now St Peter’s Community Primary School.
Whitehawk Primary School has become City Academy Whitehawk and is being sponsored by City College Brighton and Hove.
The Alternative Centre for Education (ACE) has become Homewood College.
Brighton and Hove City Council said: “The change reflects its new identity following the changes the school has experienced in the last year and the new direction it is taking this year.
“Decisions regarding school names are made by the governing bodies of individual schools, not the council.”
