Guardian journalist Nick Davies discussed his trade and its problems with an audience in Brighton this evening (Monday 21 October).
Mr Davies, author of Flat Earth News, gave a talk entitled Inside Stories, largely in the form of a question and answer session.
He spoke about the phone hacking saga, Wikileaks, his book Flat Earth News and various aspects of journalism at the Red Roaster coffee shop in St James’s Street, Brighton.
Mr Davies, a freelance from Lewes who works regularly as a special correspondent for the Guardian, played a key part in exposing the phone hacking scandal at the News of the World.
He is now working on a book about Rupert Murdoch and the hacking affair. It is due to be published in Britain, America, Canada, China and Western Europe when a number of criminal trials are finished, possibly next year.
He was pessimistic about the effect of the internet and journalism. But he said that he would still encourage people to become journalists.
The talk was organised by the National Union of Journalists Brighton and Mid Sussex Branch.
