Kemptown MP proposes moving Treasury, Home Office and DfE to Brighton

Brighton Kemptown MP Simon Kirby has proposed that the Treasury, Home Office and Department for Education relocate to Brighton.

The suggestions were made as a series of written questions to the Chancellor George Osborne, Home Secretary Theresa May and Education Secretary Michael Gove.

All three requests to consider a move to the Sussex coast have been politely declined.

On Tuesday, the Economic Secretary to the Treasury Andrea Leadsom answered on Mr Osborne’s behalf: “HM Treasury staff are currently based in London and Norwich.

“HM Treasury policy is to ensure that its current space is used to maximum efficiency in line with the Civil Service reform agenda before we would consider a move of staff or offices to Brighton, but we are grateful for his suggestion.”

The other two questions were answered this morning, also with a no.

The area needs some grown up institutions to offset the overdominance of youth and students but put them where? And it is the north that needs to be made more inclusive by having important institutions based there to rebalance the country away from the south.

It would be a nice switch for Londoners to have to commute to the coast though.
