Brighton could soon have another Sainsbury’s.
The supermarket chain is believed to be looking to open one of its smaller Sainsbury’s Local stores in Carden Avenue, Brighton.
The company may convert the old Snipe pub into a convenience store and turn the upstairs flat into three smaller flats.
Similar applications by Sainsbury’s and Tesco elsewhere in Brighton and Hove have proved controversial.
A London property company called Reef Estates has submitted a planning application to Brighton and Hove City Council.
The images submitted with the application show Sainsbury’s branding, although these may be illustrative rather than indicative. Reef has previously acted for Somerfield.
A decision on the application is due by Thursday 26 August unless there are significant objections.
It is likely to be decided by planning officers rather than by the councillors who sit on the council’s planning committee.
Under the plans, an extension would be built at the back of the premises and the garage behind the derelict pub would be demolished.
In March a previous applicant, Manoj Shah, of Liberty Developments Two, a West London property business, was given permission to demolish the Snipe.
Liberty’s plan involved building a shop and five flats on the site.
