Sussex Police said: “A 20-year-old Czech national visiting Brighton received a serious head injury after being kicked and punched.”

The force said that he has been transferred to Hurstwood Park Neurosciences Centre in Haywards Heath for specialist treatment.

A 17-year-old boy from Brighton was arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) and is currently in custody, the force said this afternoon.

The visiting student was attacked in Manchester Street at the corner of the seafront road Marine Parade at about 5am.

Sussex Police added: “It is possibly linked to an earlier robbery that took place in the Old Steine.”
