Brighton baker Kate Henry needed to shine after narrowly escaping the chop in last week’s episode of the Great British Bake Off.

Fortunately the mother-of-one was star baker during pies and tarts week so pastry should be a breeze.

“Delighted to be back again,” she said at the start of the show.

Savoury parcels to start with so Kate went with paneer and spinach.

After listing her spicy ingredients Paul Hollywood was concerned.

“This could be a flavour overload,” he said.

As it turned out her samosa inspired pastries lacked punch.

Problems with the deep fat fryer left her dough pale and “doughy”.

At a time when Kate needed to save her bacon it was a poor start.

Then the technical, the most obscure yet as no one had heard of a Kouign-amann, a Breton cake.

Technical bakes are always a challenge and it was nerve wrecking for Kate.

She said: “I want it to prove in a cool environment and I’ve done differently to everyone else in the room.

“I don’t like this waiting malarky.”

There was some concern hers were not as puffy as others.

Kate came in fourth as the curse of star baker hit Chetna who came in last place.

It was not enough to keep Kate out of Paul Hollywood’s crosshairs.

Finally choux pastry eclairs for the show stopper challenge.

Paul was looking for great innovation and creativity.

A flavoured choux pastry added to the task for Kate

Neapolitan eclairs with a chocolate choux with strawberry filling then a basil choux for lemon meringue.

It was a nervous time in the baking tent for Kate as she knew she was in trouble.

When it came to assembling Kate was in crisis: “Terrible, it’s terrible, I’m a gonna.”

It was a bit of a mixed bag for Paul and Mary, the chocolate elcairs were a mess.

With her head in her hands Kate watched as Chetna received praise for her similar eclairs.

Her head hung as presenter Mel announced she was not going through to the quarter finals.

She said: “I’m overwhelmingly pleased to have done it.

“I’ll never stop baking but I might not bake tomorrow. I might not bake the next day.”

Kate was in a difficult position going into the challenge, Paul said at the end of the show.

Kate features on The Great British Bake Off: An Extra Slice on BBC2 at 9pm on Friday, September 19.
