Crowds expected in Brighton and Hove to mark 100th anniversary of World War I

Hundreds of people are expected to turn out for seven remembrance services across Brighton and Hove tomorrow (Sunday 9 November).

The wind and rain of the past few days is due to subside. And the high cloud should mean that, despite a chilly start, the temperature reaches the low to mid fifties (10C to 13C) – not too cold for the time of year.

The first event of the day is the Royal Sussex Regimental Association Remembrance Sunday Service at the Royal Sussex Regiment Memorial, in Regency Square, Brighton.

Those attending are asked to assemble at 8.55am for the short service which is due to be held at 9am.

The main service in Brighton assembles in Madeira Drive by 10.55am ready for the parade to the Old Steine War Memorial. The service and wreath-laying ceremony are scheduled to start at 11am when there will be a traditional two-minute silence.

Given the numbers turning out in recent years, spectators are advised to be in place by 10.45am.

Services are also due to take place in Rottingdean, Hove and Portslade in the morning.

The Royal British Legion parade in Rottingdean sets off from outside the White Horse at 10.40am for the village green. An act of remembrance is due to take place at the memorial on the village green at noon.

In Portslade, the silence is also due to take place at 11am at the Easthill Park Memorial where wreaths will be laid.

In Southwick the parade is due to leave the Southwick Square car park at 10.45am for a service at the war memorial on Southwick Green starting at 10.55am.

In Hove Cemetery, Old Shoreham Road, Hove, a short wreath-laying ceremony will take place first at the North Gate Memorial at 11am. This will be followed by the same ceremony at the South Gate Memorial. No service is planned.

The main ceremony in Hove is due to take place in the afternoon, with veterans and supporters expected to gather by the war memorial in Grand Avenue, Hove, at 2.30pm.

A parade will leave Hove Town Hall at 2.10pm and make its way to the war memorial for the wreath-laying ceremony.

Afterwards the parade will head to All Saints’ Church for a full service of remembrance which starts at 3pm.

The Brighton and Hove branch of the Association of Jewish Ex-Servicemen and Women will gather for the final ceremony of the day at 4.25pm. Members are due to attend a service of remembrance at the Brighton and Hove Reform Synagogue in Palmeira Avenue, Hove.
