Crowds defy downpour at Hove fireworks display – Plus watch this Lewes Bonfire time lapse video

About 5,000 people in Hove defied the damp and windy weather to watch the town’s biggest and most spectacular fireworks display at the weekend.

The annual Family Firework Spectacular was held at the Nevill Playing Field, in Nevill Road, Hove, on Saturday evening (8 November).

A downpour during the evening didn’t stop the skies lighting up as the organisers used an array of waterproof fireworks stored with extra protection from the elements.

Despite the soggy conditions, spectators took to social media to praise the display, which also raised money for the Argus Appeal charity.

An even larger number of people from Brighton and Hove were among the 22,000 to travel to Lewes by train for Bonfire Night on Wednesday (5 November).

About 40,000 people packed the streets, according to a Sussex Police estimate.

South East Coast Ambulance Service and St John Ambulance treated 49 individuals for injuries, with just six people needing hospital treatment. None of the injuries were believed to be serious.

And 14 people were arrested for offences which included being drunk and disorderly, having drugs, attacking a British Transport Police officer causing actual bodily harm (ABH), having a knife and being drunk in charge of a vehicle.

A photographer, Jason Reeve, of JR Aperture, shot a time lapse video of Lewes from a nearby hill in Offham, condensing hours into a matter of minutes. Here it is on his YouTube channel.
