Thousands of commuters from Brighton and Hove were delayed on their way to work this morning by the closure overnight of one side of the M25.
A section of the motorway collapsed. Work had been taking place at or near the damaged stretch of road although it is not clear whether this was the cause of the collapse.
A travel alert to drivers said: “Severe delays and three lanes closed due to subsidence on M25 anticlockwise around J9 A243 / A244 / B2430 (Leatherhead), congestion on M25 to J13 A30 (Staines).
“Travel time is over 120 minutes. Lanes one, two and three are still closed after the road surface in lane two collapsed around 5.30 this morning. The exit slip road to Junction 9 reopened just after 9.45am.”
Surface flooding in Brighton created queues and delays locally. Among the roads affected in Brighton was Lewes Road.
And the same road was closed at the Vogue Gyratory after the morning rush hour because of a gas leak.
A travel alert to drivers said: “A270 Lewes Road both ways closed due to gas leak at Newmarket Road / Bear Road / Hollingdean Road.”
