The family of a Hove man who was attacked by a cyclist have thanked police, medical staff and the community for their overwhelming support.
Greengrocer Tony Magdi, 52, was knocked out and suffered serious head injuries when he was attacked in Portland Road, Hove, on Sunday.
He is believed to have opened the door of his Jaguar into the path of three cyclists, causing them to take avoiding action.
An argument followed during which one of the cyclists punched Mr Magdi, knocking him out.
Today Mr Magdi’s family and friends issued a statement saying: “The family and friends of Tony Magdi want to give our heartfelt thanks to everybody who has helped with this terrible situation.
“We are grateful to the police and medical staff for their efforts, and we are thankful for the support from the community, which has been truly overwhelming.
“Please keep Tony in your thoughts as we hope for his recovery.”
Sussex Police said that a 35-year old Brighton man, arrested on suspicion of assault, was being questioned about the attack.
A 36-year-old man was arrested after handing himself into police on Tuesday (9 November) and later released without charge.
Mr Magdi was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton for treatment.
He was later transferred to Hurstwood Park Neurosciences Centre, in Haywards Heath, where he remains in a stable but critical condition.
