Not everyone likes the term “sheltered housing”. And not everyone in Brighton and Hove liked the acronym for the Sheltered Housing Action Group.
So tenants have come up with a new name. And it hasn’t gone down well with everyone.
It is now known as the Seniors Housing Action Group.
And the initial response suggests that not all the anxieties have been dispelled – in part because of the acronym and in part because not everyone in sheltered housing is a senior citizen.
Brighton and Hove City Council Housing Committee backed the change but one councillor seemed less than gruntled.
Councillor Anne Meadows objected to the double entendre and said: “Can we not think of another name such as ‘senior citizens housing’ that can’t be shortened to SHAG?”
But Housing Committee chairman Councillor Bill Randall said that he was happy with the name chosen by tenants.
Even in Brighton and Hove, where double entendres are rife, not everyone can have Bona Homes.
Wonder how my former neighbour (in her forties) feels about becoming a person in Senior Housing rather than Sheltered Housing. This seems to show that the Sheltered Housing Action Group had no substantive business to discuss to created a problem to solve.
