The number of claimants has risen in the Brighton travel to work area, according to the latest unemployment figures.

And the Brighton and Hove district continues to have the second highest level of unemployment in Sussex.

The figures released yesterday by the Office for National Statistics said that there were 17,000 unemployed people in the Brighton travel to work area, a rise of 1,000.

The same set of figures said that the number of claimants had risen from 9,612 to 9, 884.

Separate statistics for the area served by Brighton and Hove City Council said that 3.5 per cent of the population was claiming jobseeker’s allowance – the same as the national average.

The East Sussex average is 2.9 per cent and for West Sussex it is 2.2 per cent.

Hastings is the only council area in Sussex with a higher level of claimants at 5.4 per cent.

The average level for the South East is 2.4 per cent.

Under 24s appear to be the age group hardest hit, according to the latest figures.

And in Brighton and Hove there are about twice as many men as women claiming unemployment benefits.
