A Portslade car leasing and contract hire company can build new premises next to its car dealership despite reservations about parking problems in the area.
Rivervale was granted planning permission for the new premises in Victoria Road, Portslade, subject to the company agreeing a transport plan with Brighton and Hove City Council.
The new three-storey building would include offices, car servicing bays and car parking spaces on a site that has been derelict for 15 years.
The building that used to stand on the site burnt down in 2000.
Rivervale expects to create about 15 jobs with the bigger new premises and anticipates 32 staff in total working at the site.
The council’s Planning Committee discussed the application in a meeting at Portslade Town Hall this afternoon (Wednesday 22 Aprl).
Councillor Carol Theobald told the committee that she would like to have seen more parking places provided for staff.
Councillor Bob Carden said: “We’ve now become the parking area for the centre of Brighton. People come in from places like Small Dole and Henfield and hop on the number 1 bus.”
Councillor Penny Gilbey said that she was pleased about the 32 jobs but was concerned about the parking situation too.
Councillor Alan Robins said that it was the one part of Portslade where he received complaints about parking problems.
The application was agreed with 11 votes in favour. Councillor Ian Davey abstained.
