Brighton & Hove Albion: Calde and Casper stay but CMS is on his way

Brighton & Hove Albion: Half time with Hodges

Craig Mackail-Smith, Albion’s record signing, will leave the club when his contract expires in June.

Player of the season Inigo Calderon and, somewhat surprisingly, long-serving but seldom-used goalkeeper Casper Ankergren will be offered new deals to stay with the Seagulls.

Manager Chris Hughton told Brighton and Hove News that although the recruitment team were working hard all year, their efforts would certainly be stepped up in the next few months.

He intimated that he would like to strengthen the attacking midfield options and obviously a proven goalscorer is a must.

The Seagulls boss also indicated that Mackail-Smith would feature prominently in Albion’s last home game at the Amex against Watford.

He said: “We have to thank him for what he has done for the club, irrespective of form and appearances.

“He is a professional player and what you’ll get is a wholehearted performance and we certainly wish him well for the future.”

Mackail-Smith has been a firm favourite with Albion fans since joining the Seagulls for £2.5 million in July 2011.

So far he has made 103 appearances and scored 21 goals.

He also joins an elite band of players who have scored an international goal while a Seagulls player, netting for Scotland against Lichtenstein in October 2011.

A goal on Saturday (25 April) against Watford would send the Amex faithful “who just can’t get enough” of CMS into raptures.

Aaron Hughes, Paddy McCourt, Vitalijs Maksimenko and unsurprisingly Kemy Agustien are also to be released by Albion.

Agustien made only 13 appearances in two years at the club.
