Diversions affect traffic on key Brighton road

Traffic delays are likely in and around Eastern Road, Brighton, as work resumes on running a new power supply into the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

The work started at the end of May and continues today (Saturday 13 June) and tomorrow (Sunday 14 June).

Eastern Road is being narrowed to a single lane while UK Power Networks runs a new electrical supply into the hospital as part of the £480 million modernisation.

Royal Sussex road diversionA section of Eastern Road, next to the south west corner of the hospital, will be reduced to a single lane from 9am to 5pm.

Five-way temporary traffic lights are being set up across the extended junction made up by Eastern Road, Abbey Road, Upper Abbey Road and Bellevue Gardens.

The pedestrian crossing in front of the hospital is due to be suspended. A temporary one will be placed further west, outside the hospital’s main Outpatient Department.

The bus stops on either side of Eastern Road, towards the west end of the hospital site, will be moved further east temporarily.

Buses that would normally stop outside the main Outpatient Building will use the Sussex Eye Hospital bus stop instead.

The power supply will be used in work to modernise the hospital, including supplying electricity to the new modular building at the front of the hospital site.

The building will house clinical services and clear space for the first phase of what is known as the “3Ts” project.
