Lunch for 5,000 from waste food to be served up on the Level

Brighton chefs will be whipping up a free curry lunch for 5,000 people from food which would otherwise have been wasted later this month.

The Feeding the 5,000 event will be held on The Level from 11am to 3pm on Thursday 29 October. It will feature cookery demos and talks by food campaigners.

Vera Zakharov, co-ordinator of the city’s Love Food Hate Waste campaign, said: “Everyone should come along and take part in our joyous celebration, from people looking for inspiration to tackle food waste at home to those keen to get involved in our fantastic local food-saving projects.

“If you like free food, funky tunes and want to join the movement to end food waste, this is for you.”

Tristram Stuart, Feedback founder, said: “Food waste is a massive issue across the globe, including here in Brighton and Hove.

“But there are some great initiatives happening locally with the aim of stamping out food waste and at this event you’ll literally taste the fruits of their labour.”

Speakers and special guests include Tristram Stuart, global food waste campaigner and author, the Green MP for Brighton Pavilion Caroline Lucas, Douglas McMaster, the chef behind Silo zero waste restaurant, and Lindsay Boswell, CEO of FareShare UK.

The event has been organised by the Brighton and Hove Food Partnership, Brighton and Hove City Council, FareShare Brighton and Hove, Food Waste Collective, Real Junk Food Project, Love Activists Brighton, University of Sussex Students’ Union and Brighton University with guidance and support from Feedback.
