When the ball hits the net … Zamora scores winner as Brighton & Hove Albion win at Leeds

Leeds United 1 Brighton & Hove Albion 2

Bobby Zamora scored his first Albion goal since May 2003 as the Seagulls beat Leeds for the fourth match in a row to go four points clear at the top of the league.

The Seagulls took the lead through Solly March after great play from Beram Kayal. March sprinted clear to put the ball in the corner of the net via a touch from Leeds keeper Marco Silvestri.

Soon after, former Albion striker Chris Wood had the first of his three clear-cut chances to score. Lewis Dunk managed to knock the ball away at the last second as Wood looked to latch on to a cross.

Leeds equalised through Liam Cooper who glanced a header past the seemingly wrong-footed Leeds-born David Stockdale in the Albion goal.

The home side looked stronger than Albion for a while. Wood missed a gilt-edged chance from the edge of the six-yard box. Alex Mowatt crossed in for the Kiwi, who headed wide.

March hit the bar for Albion in the second half and, after the ball ricocheted around the six-yard box, Wood flicked over from almost under the cross bar.

Stockdale then fired a clearance straight at Stewart Dallas but the ball bounced to safety.

Both teams searched for a winner. Neither seemed prepared to settle for a draw.

Then with a minute left Gatean Bong cut in from the left and threaded a ball through to substitute Zamora. The veteran striker rolled back the years and sublimely lifted the ball over Silvestri to put Albion back in front.

After he scored Zamora kissed the Albion badge on his shirt to cap a great day for the Seagulls.

Albion next take on Bristol City at the Amex on Tuesday evening (20 March) at 7.45pm.
