Six people have been held since the start of a crackdown on riding motorbikes off-road in Brighton, Sussex Police said this afternoon (Friday 23 October).

The force said: “Anti-social use of off-road bikes in and around Brighton’s Whitehawk estate has been the spark for a Community Safety Day being held on Saturday 31 October.

“Some of the motorbikes are stolen, while the manner in which many are driven has been proving hazardous to others using local footpaths and tracks.

“And the dumping of burnt-out bikes in the Sheepcote Valley is a threat to the area’s natural beauty.”

Police Community Support Officer Andrew McAllister said: “In recent weeks there have been six people in custody in relation to motorcycle crime in Whitewhawk.

“Sussex Police is committed to stamping out this problem.”

The safety day – organised by the police with support from Brighton and Hove City Council, Brighton Marina, Due East and the Crew Club – is a step towards this.PCSO McAllister said: “We aim to highlight the dangers and consequences of anti-social, off-road motorbiking.”

The event is being held from midday until 3pm at the Crew Club, Coolham Drive (near Haybourne pitches) with food provided by Due East.

Attractions will include a demonstration of drones and their use by police to detect and deter crime – including tracking off-road offenders.

The Sussex Police dog unit will also give a display of tracking and “take down” techniques.

PCSO McAllister said: “There will be many other exhibits besides and we hope to see as many people there as possible.”
