Brighton stabbing suspect to face court charged with attempted murder

A 17-year-old boy from Brighton has been jailed for three years after throwing acid in a relative’s face.

Both the boy and his victim were treated in hospital for burns after the attack in The Crestway, Hollingdean, last August.

The boy, who was 16 when he attacked his relative, concocted the home-made acid mixture from vinegar, salt and battery acid.

When the teenager first appeared in court Mark Kateley, the prosecutor, said: “The attack happened in front of the victim’s mother.

“The victim is due to see a specialist today. The pictures shown to the court show burn marks on his face and there seems to be some abrasion to the cornea of one of his eyes.

“The full extent (of his injuries) is not known but it is clear these are serious burns and a serious injury. The crown says this was a calculated, targeted attack.”

He was ordered to be kept in custody by magistrate John Kirby, who told him that he had carried out “a violent offence which resulted in serious burns”.

Sussex Police said today (Friday 5 February): “A 17-year-old Brighton boy has been sentenced to three years in custody after he pleaded guilty to wounding with intent, having thrown a corrosive substance into the face of a relative in August.

“The boy, who was 16 at the time and cannot be identified for legal reasons, appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 21 January.

“The court heard that on (Tuesday) 18 August he had thrown a substance into the face of a 24-year-old relative outside a house in Hollingdean, Brighton.

“Several hundred pounds worth of damage was also caused to a car outside the house, for which he admitted a charge of criminal damage. He received no separate penalty for this offence.

“The boy admitted that he had concocted the substance from a number of household items, including parts of a battery.

“He also required hospital treatment for burns suffered during the incident.”
