Storm Imogen blows roof loose on King Alfred in Hove

Storm Imogen has blown the roof loose on the King Alfred Leisure Centre in Hove.

The swimming pool and leisure centre has been closed to the public as workers try to secure the building.

Sussex Police closed the promenade – even though it was upwind of the danger – but left the A259 coast road open.

Sussex Police closed Hove promenade on the upwind side of the King Alfred during a storm this morning – for safety reasons – while leaving the A259 open even though they said the prom was shut in case the leisure centre roof blew off

Overnight the gable end of a house collapsed in Chichester Drive East in Saltdean. East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service sent a crew from Roedean who spent more than 90 minutes securing the building. The road was still closed this morning.

A scaffold tower became unsafe in South Coast Road, Peacehaven. A fire crew from Newhaven used a triple extension ladder and a general purpose line to make the structure safe in the early hours of this morning (Monday 8 February).

The fire service said: “Members of the public are being reminded to take care in the wind and rain and of the importance of taking preventative measures and knowing who they should call if they see things like blocked drains.”
