Retired Brighton teacher charged with sex offences against pupils at Boris Johnson’s old school

A retired teacher from Brighton has been charged with a series of sexual offences involving former pupils.

He is one of two men charged with sex offences at the prep school where former pupils include London mayor Boris Johnson and Homeland and Wolf Hall actor Damian Lewis.

Martin Haigh, 66, unemployed, of Lavender Street, in Kemp Town, has been charged with 11 offences – five of indecent assault and six of gross indecency – from 1972 to 1978.

Sussex Police said: “Four of the indecent assault charges against Haigh involve one boy and the fifth charge involves another boy.

“Two of the gross indecency charges involve the boy subject of the four indecent assault charges, two involve a second boy, one involves another third boy and one involves a fourth boy.

“All the boys were aged under 16 at the time of the alleged offences.”

A second retired teacher Maurice Victor Clive Williams, 71, of High Street, Barcombe, near Lewes, has also been charged with historic sex offences.

He is accused of four offences – two of indecent assault and two of gross indecency, all with a girl under 16 between dates in 1989 and 1993.

Sussex Police said: “The offences are alleged to have occurred while both men were employed as teachers at Ashdown House School near Forest Row.

“None of the offences are alleged to have been committed jointly.”

The two men are due to appear on police bail at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 21 April.

Sussex Police said: “Police emphasise that there are no current or recent safeguarding issues at the school in relation to this case.

“A third man, now aged 68, arrested in Tadley, Hampshire, in January 2015 on suspicion of gross indecency has been stood down from his police bail while the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service) considers the evidence in relation to him.”

The £8,000-a-year boarding school was founded in Brighton in 1843 before moving to the Sussex countryside just over 40 years later.

It is owned by the Cothill Educational Trust which closed St Aubyns in Rottingdean in 2013 and plans to put almost 100 houses and flats on the former school site.
