More than a year of roadworks has come to an end at a busy Brighton junction.
Roadworks at the A27 junction with Lewes Road (the A270) ended this week and will open to traffic next week.
The work has affected the Coldean and Moulsecoomb area in preparation for the opening of the new Brighton and Hove Albion football stadium at Falmer.
It has been funded by the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) and led by the Brighton and Hove City Council.
The work was also said to be about creating a new gateway to the city and supporting the creation of the “academic corridor”.
The corridor runs from the Brighton University site in Grand Parade to the new entrance to the Sussex University campus at Falmer.
The work will be fully completed on Monday 10 January when the existing Falmer House road access to Sussex University from the A27 will be closed.
Councillor Mary Mears, the leader of Brighton and Hove City Council, said: “We are pleased to be involved in delivering these important improvement works.
“These will support the Albion’s new stadium and deliver significant numbers of jobs in the area.
“They will also serve the wider academic corridor along the Lewes Road and improve access to the Keep, the proposed new records centre being developed in partnership with East Sussex.”
Councillor Mears was joined by Gilly Bartrip, from SEEDA, David Kirkwood, director of estates and facilities management at Sussex University, and Albion chief executive Martin Perry for an official ribbon-cutting ceremony on the new flyover.
Gilly Bartrip, area director for Sussex, at SEEDA, said: “The completion of the improvement works at the Lewes Road junction marks an important step in our work to support the growth of the local economy in Brighton.
“Our £5 million investment here has been able to provide a firm basis for future investment opportunities in the area and deliver significant changes to the key gateway to the city.
“It will also support the delivery of the new Amex Community Stadium.”
The works began in October 2009.
