Memorial fund set up for Hove greengrocer Tony Magdi

A memorial fund has been started for the popular Hove greengrocer who died after a road rage attack by a cyclist.

Tony Magdi was felled by a punch in Portland Road, Hove, opposite his home and the shop which he ran.

He died three weeks later – on Sunday 28 November – after contracting an infection while being treated at the Hurstwood Park Neurosciences Centre in Haywards Heath.

Brian Oxley and Denise Cobb, the two councillors for Westbourne ward where Mr Magdi lived and worked, have printed a poster and started collecting for a memorial fund.

The fund is supported by Councillor Geoff Wells, the Mayor of Brighton and Hove.

The two ward councillors said: “Following the tragic death of Tony Magdi, the Portland Road grocer, we would like to organise a memorial in line with local residents’ wishes.”

Cheques should be made payable to Brighton and Hove City Council and can be handed to Councillor Oxley or posted to him.

There are collection boxes in some shops in the Portland Road area.

Councillor Oxley can be reached at brian.oxley1@mac.com or on 01273 728955.
