City College Brighton and Hove has come top in the national GCSE achievement tables.

Out of 214 general further education and tertiary providers across the country, City College has been ranked in first place nationally for A* to C grades in GCSE English and mathematics in 2014-15.

The benchmark results were achieved by 64 per cent of City College students.
The results were recorded in national achievement tables published by the Skills Funding Agency.

For GCSE English, City College’s A* to C achievement stands at 76.5 per cent for all age groups which is also top in the country out of all comparable providers.

Among 16-18 year olds, 77.9 per cent achieved A* to C grades in GCSE English, again placing the college first nationally and beating the closest Sussex college by 23 percentage points.

Among adult students, 71.3 per cent achieved A* to C grades in GCSE English, also the best in Sussex out of all further education and tertiary providers.

City College was also ranked first place in Sussex for GCSE mathematics for all age groups, placing it in the top 11 per cent nationally, with 51.1 per cent achieving A* to C grades.

City College principal Sharon Collett said: “We know that our students will have better career opportunities if they have at least the minimum GCSE English and maths at grade A* to C and, to help them achieve good results, our expert staff dedicate themselves to ensuring students have belief in their ability, often following years of poor results.

“It is this combination of supporting students to learn and develop these essential skills coupled with a focus on building confidence and motivation that has led to such outstanding outcomes.

“I would like to pay tribute to our English and maths team and our 16 to 18-year-old students who never gave up. We are so proud of them all.”

In addition to these impressive results, the college’s provision for 16 to 18-year-olds is placed in the top third in the country for all levels for general further education and tertiary colleges and is in the top 11 per cent for level 2 and the top 25 per cent for level 3 courses.

City College is still recruiting for courses starting in September. For more information, visit www.ccb.ac.uk or call course information on 01273 667759.
