Brighton social worker recognised for professionalism and so much more

Queen recognises people from Brighton and Hove in birthday honours list

A Brighton social worker has been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for his professional work with vulnerable children and his incredible range of voluntary work.

Nigel Nash, 62, a service manager for the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (CAFCASS), has been made an MBE.

The citation said that his honour was for services to children and voluntary service to the LGBT community.

Mr Nash has been working with children since 1985 and has been a frontline social worker at a number of local authorities since 1991.

Since 2008, when he became a service manager for the Brighton region of CAFCASS, he has been the catalyst of a local transformation.

He has led a team of 20 people to provide social care services for some of the most vulnerable children on the south coast.

His inspirational management style has reduced his team’s sickness rate by 92 per cent and, most importantly, he has seen a dramatic improvement in the quality of work produced in the region.

On top of this he has found time for a range of voluntary and charitable services.

In 1981 he completed his pastoral ministry training. For over 20 years he has been the convenor and chair of the Brighton and Hove LGCM (Lesbian and Gay Christians), challenging homophobia within the Christian faith to help develop a wholly inclusive church.

He is the safeguarding representative in a local church, and works with a local bereavement charity, providing training on how they can best support those recovering from traumatic situations.

He has also volunteered for over 15 years at a local shelter by providing food for homeless people in Brighton.
