Thousands of women took part in the Race for Life in Brighton at the weekend in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Almost all of them wore at least a dash of pink – and some wore pink head to toe – as they walked or ran a conventional 5k or 10k in Stanmer Park.

Others went for the Pretty Muddy 5k obstacle course which included mud pits, a space hopper and, just before the finish line, a mudslide.

Lynn Daly, from Cancer Research UK, urged women to “help bring us one step closer to the day when all cancers are cured”.

The weekend events in Brighton are among about 150 Race for Life events where hundreds of thousands of women raise not just money but awareness about cancer.

Sabrina MacDonald, 40, from London, said: “I have a friend who has cancer and she is starting treatment next week so it gave me the dedication. We’ve each got someone we know who is affected by it.

“It is for every level and every ability so if you want to go on ahead you can or if you want to trot or walk you can do that as well.”

Nic Naish, from Worthing, said: “I am a cancer survivor and now I am a fitness instructor so I think everyone should just get up and do their bit and stay healthy.

“England may have its faults but it is a very charitable country. We show our best side when it comes to charity.”

As well as the race there were stalls offering refreshments and activities for the runners, family and friends, including one staffed by Amanda’s Angels. They were working with Amanda Woodhouse who has a brain tumour.

Cancer Research UK said that the fundraising events were vital, with one in two people likely to develop cancer at some point in their lives.
