Cardinal Newman reports better GCSE results

Cardinal Newman Catholic School

Hove MP Peter Kyle is due to join sixth formers at Cardinal Newman Catholic School at a two-day careers fair today (Friday 15 July).

The sixth form – known as Newman College – said that its Careers and Employability Fair was intended “to give students the opportunity to connect with the local business community”.

More than 25 exhibitors and speakers are taking part in the event which is a joint project involving the sixth form, Sussex Business for Schools, the National Careers Service and John Young Media.

And more than 450 students from years 10 and 12 are expected to attend the fair which started yesterday (Thursday 14 July) and continues today.

The school said: “It has been designed to raise levels of aspiration and ensure that students gain effective and impartial careers advice direct from local employers, providers and a number of universities.”

The highlights include

  • Fun workshop sessions such as “What’s My Line?” where students have to question employers to work out what they do for their jobs
  • An electric car display linked to STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) programmes at Sussex University
  • Apprenticeship providers on hand to advise on apprenticeship programmes
  • Employers such as Barclays who are running “life skills” workshop sessions about preparation for the world of work

John Young, from John Young Media, will present some sessions on employability skills and Solutions Inc will help students to present themselves to employers with a digital CV.

NHS staff will be on hand to talk about careers and give students some practical demonstrations including carrying out resuscitation.

Senior assistant head Graham Goldup said: “This promises to be a great event and ensures that all of our students are fully informed and prepared for their university applications and have valuable insights into a range of potential employment opportunities in the future.”
