Uber applies to renew its licence to operate in Brighton and Hove

Brighton disability advocates ask Uber for reassurance on wheelchair-friendly cabs

The taxi business Uber has applied to renew its licence in Brighton and Hove almost a year after it was first given permission to operate in the area.

The controversial company was awarded a one-year licence by Brighton and Hove City Council a year ago. That licence expires on Friday 4 November.

The taxi trade has been rife with talk of a recruitment drive by Uber although previously the taxi hailing app company said: “Currently, we do not have a timescale for our Brighton operations.”

Uber has faced concerted opposition from Brighton taxi companies, including Streamline and City Cabs, who are concerned that the newcomer may not compete fairly. Like Brighton and Hove Buses, the local taxi firms have their own mobile phone apps.

Elsewhere Uber has been the subject of criticism and court cases, including in London and Paris. The company was fined 800,000 euros in Paris in June.

Uber has proved popular in many cities around the world and claims to be innovative, safe and often cheaper than its traditional rivals.

This afternoon (Tuesday 25 October) the council confirmed that Uber had applied to renew its licence but gave no date for the application to be decided.

Exactly what they are doing in Brighton. Completely undermines council taxi licensing policies.
