Two minutes’ silence for Armistice across Brighton and Hove

Thousands of people across Brighton and Hove fell silent for two minutes to mark the Armistice yesterday (Friday 11 November).

Short services were held at 11am – the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month – at the Old Steine war memorial, Brighton, and the war memorial in Grand Avenue, Hove.

Children from St Andrew’s CE Primary School were among the crowd in Hove where wreaths were laid on behalf of Brighton and Hove City Council, East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and the Royal British Legion.

The Mayor of Brighton and Hove Pete West, who laid the first wreath, said afterwards: “I was very pleased to see so many attending the Hove service, including children from local schools.

“Standard bearing veterans helped to explain the meaning and significance of the occasion to this new generation.”

One of them, Mick O’Keefe, is taking part in the annual Service of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall in London this evening (Saturday 12 November).

Yesterday afternoon the large vault of St Bartholomew’s Church, Brighton, was packed for the Children’s Act of Remembrance.
