Brighton and Hove taxpayers invited to inspect council’s books

Volunteering, race equality and domestic and sexual violence are on the agenda at a Brighton and Hove City Council committee meeting this afternoon (Monday 28 November).

A youth worker is due to raise her concerns about proposed cuts to the youth service in the area and a Brunswick resident will flag up problem drink and drug-related anti-social behaviour.

The council’s Neighbourhoods, Communities and Equalities Committee is meeting at St Richard’s Church Hall, in Egmont Road, on the Knoll estate in Hove.

The committee is due to discuss domestic and sexual violence against women and girls. There are more cases being reported but less money is available for tackling the problem, with some existing services at risk. The committee is being asked to approve work on a new strategy to address the issue.

Members are also expected to discuss race equality at work. People from the black and ethnic minority communities are less likely to have a job in Brighton and Hove than the native local population. The committee is being asked to support proposals to tackle some of the barriers to work that they face.

There will be an update on the Fairness Commission. The committee will respond on behalf of the council to the commission’s recommendations, made in June.

And there will be a presentation about the power of volunteering. The council signed a pledge to encourage volunteering and the committee will hear how it’s getting on and what steps are being taken by some other big public sector organisations.

As well as councillors, representatives from Sussex Police and the community and voluntary sector are due to attend.
