Police investigating the death of a pensioner in a hit-and-run incident in Brighton three weeks ago have made a specific appeal for the driver of a light-coloured hatchback to come forward.

Sergeant Richard Hornsey from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “It’s possible that the driver or other occupants of this car make this journey regularly and the three week anniversary might prompt their recollection.

“The car is a light-coloured five-door hatchback, possibly a silver or grey Renault, that was travelling down Edward Street at about 9.55pm on Tuesday, January 10. It had to stop suddenly in the junction with Grand Parade and Old Steine.

“I would stress that the driver is not a suspect, but they may have important information that could assist our investigation and I would urge them to email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk or report online quoting Operation Beresford.”

Jonos ‘John’ Sasvari, 78, of Little Preston Street, Brighton, died after being hit by a car at the junction between Old Steine and St James’s Street.

A 33-year-old man and a 35-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, drink driving, failing to stop for police and failing to report an accident. They have both been bailed for all the offences until February 27 while investigations continue.
